75Introduction
‘Holding the horse’s reins in her teeth, flashing the sword with both the hands, the valiant firebrand, legendary heroine, the Goddess of war, and the epitome of female bravery in India, Maharani Lakshmi Bai had been riding away through the ocean of British solders, as if Goddess Durga herself arrived on the earth to demolish the brigade of Demons’. This is not a mare day dream of the patriot Indians, but this was how she fled away from the Gwalior fort when the fort was captured by company regiment. Rani Lakshmi Bai has been established as the icon of Indian independence movement and she is considered to be one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She is considered as the embodiment of patriotism. Lakshmi Bai was the queen of a small state, but the empress of a limitless empire of glory.
Knowing the thrilling story of womanliness, courage, adventure, deathless patriotism and martyrdom, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, another unforgettable legendary hero of Indian rebellion history, created women brigade of his Indian National Army (INA) and it was named after her ‘The Rani Of Jhansi Regiment’. Lakshmi Bai lived for only 22 years and seven months; she flashed and disappeared like lightning on a dark night.

The History
The maiden name of Maharani Lakshmi Bai was Manikarnika. Her nickname was Manu. She was born on 19 November 1835 at Kashi (previously known as Banaras and now as Varanasi) to a Maharashtrian Karhade Brahmin family. Her father Moropant Tambey was from Dwadashi, District Satara of Maharashtra and worked at the court of Peshwa Baji Rao II at Bithur. Manikarnika lost her mother at the age of four and was educated at home by her father. She was a brave girl since her childhood and practiced horse riding, archery, sword fighting which normally being taught to the boys only. Baji Rao was extremely affectionate to this valiant girl and considered her as one of his children.
At the age of 14 she was married to Maharaja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar , The King of Jhansi. Her father was then given the position of a minister in the court of Raja Bai Gangadhar Rao.
After her marriage, she was given the name Lakshmi Bai. Because of her father's influence at court, Rani Lakshmi Bai enjoyed more independence than most women of that time. She formed her own army out of her female friends at court and from nearby villages.
Rani Lakshmi Bai gave birth to a son in 1851, however this child died when he was about four months old. After the death of their son, the queen and the king of Jhansi adopted a boy named Damodar Rao. However, it is said that her husband the Raja never recovered from his son's death, and he died on 21 November 1853 of a broken heart.
Because Damodar Rao was adopted and not biologically related to the Raja, the East India Company, under Governor-General Lord Dalhousie rejected Damodar Rao's rightful claim to the throne. Dalhousie then annexed Jhansi, saying that the throne had become "lapsed" and thus put Jhansi under his "protection". In March 1854, the Rani was given a pension of 60,000 rupees and ordered to leave the palace at the Jhansi fort. But Lakshmi Bai was determined not to give Jhansi to the hand of East India Company. She started to strengthen her army. Meanwhile on May 10, 1857 the Sepoy (soldier) Mutiny of India started in Meerut. Unrest began to spread throughout India and in May of 1857, the First War of Indian Independence erupted in numerous pockets across the northern subcontinent. East India Company was forced to focus its attentions elsewhere, and Lakshmi Bai was essentially left to rule Jhansi alone. During this time, she proved her qualities and shown her efficiency to lead her troops against skirmishes breaking out in Jhansi. The leadership Lakshmi Bai was able to keep Jhansi relatively calm and peaceful in the midst of the Empire’s unrest.
But those peaceful days were ended when the British troops arrived under Sir Hugh Rose and laid cordon to Jhansi on 23rd March 1858. Maharani Lakshmi Bai decided not to surrender. The fierce fighting continued for about two weeks. Shelling on Jhansi was very severe. The women of Jhansi were also involved in the war by carrying ammunition and supplying foodstuff to the soldiers. Maharani herself was very active. She was keeping her personal vigil on the defense of the city, rallied her troops around her and fought fiercely against the British. A large army of 20,000, headed by the rebel leader Tatya Tope was sent to rescue Jhansi. But before they could reach Jhansi, the well trained and disciplined British army of only 1,540 intensified the attack and Lakshmi Bai was forced to flee away from Jhansi. Rani along with the young Damodar Rao and some of her warrior follower reached Kalpi and joined other rebel forces, including those of Tatya Tope. The Rani and Tatya Tope moved on to Gwalior, where the combined rebel forces defeated the army of the Maharaja of Gwalior after his armies deserted to the rebel forces. They then occupied the strategic fort at Gwalior. However on the second day of fighting, on 18 June 1858, the sole of Maharani Lakshmi was departed from her mortal body while she was fighting with the British in disguise of an ordinary warrior. Her body was not found by the British soldiers and it was believed that a quick funeral was done secretly as per her standing instructions to her close followers. And thus the glorious life of this legendary heroine as well as the glorious era of the Indian rebellion history came to an end.
The TV Serial - Jhansi Ki Rani
Recent trend in the Indian TV serial to glorify the negative characters and exhibition of their repeated victory had made me sick and I was about to take the resolution of not watching any more of those shows. And then incidentally my attention was caught by a show on the name of the great queen of Jhansi. Although the story was not a cent per cent reflection of the history, I found most of the historical characters were portrayed as per their image projected in the Indian history. I became immediately a fan of this show ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’ aired by the TV channel Zee TV.
Ulka Gupta - The Budding Star
It was amazing to watch the role of Manikarnika, the heroine of this show. Ulka Gupta in her early teen is playing this role and each time I watch this show I think that it is not Ulka but Manikarnika herself arrived here from the page of the glorious history book to perform this role. It has been known that she has been trained in horsemanship, archery and sword fighting to play this role in the serial. I respect her dedication and enthusiasm towards the perfection in playing this historical character. I have collected some pictures of Ulka Gupta in the costume of ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’ which I am sharing with all. If anybody can help me in supplying more information and pictures I will be glad to incorporate those in my hub.

Rani Lakshmi Bhai is a great lady.It is unfortunate that she did not get support and died very early.I think Motibhai stayed with her through out and fought the wars along with her. The serial is good and Ulka ia an excellent choice for the role. However, I am not sure if the episodes are based on real events or are they just created to get the tempo?

Role of Rani Laxmibai was amaizing in her real life...People of india and present politician has lot to learn from this characters. Her committment towards her land can not be forgotten. As far as TV serial is concern, yes Ulka Gupta did excellent job and gave enough justice to the character. I wish her all the best for her future roles and wish her to continue the same show.

In such a short time the serial jhansi ki rani has taken a deep place in my heart. I have heard her stories many times and thought that she was just a warrior ,but this serial has just opened my eyes.It showed us how she bravely fought with the britishers and sacrifised her life to set india free from the evil british. Now ,i am missing this serial a lot. Now it's just 2 wishes i have, that this serial may start again and, second wish is that, i want to go back in the time of queen of jhansi so that, i can watch her life history through my own eyes because if it is so interesting to watch her life history on tv then how wonderful it would be to watch it all live
LAST EPISODE OF JHANSI KE RANI WAS NOT AS PER HISTORY. SHE SHOULD FIGHT IN DISGUISE OF A GENT WORRIOR IN RIDING IN HORSE AND FOUGHT BREAVELY AND FINALY ESCAPED WITH INJURY AND SOME INDIAN HELPS HER AND BURN HER AS PER HER LASTWISH. Jhansi rani serial is very much near to my heart. The two Ranis are very talented and are very beautiful. They make us feel that we are looking the real Rani. Hats off to the costume deziner and art director. The costume and jewellery suits the artists very much. The settings are natural and grand. We feel that we are looking the real happening and not the serial. All the main characters are very natural. Rani, Gangador Rao, Bajirao, Praji, Dhathya guru, narasinga Rao and so on . The selection of artist is apt. The credit goes to the director. The love that Gangador had on Rani is very much pleasing. There are some unwanted charactors they should have avoided. I want to see the all characters in their costumes from chutti Praji to Bajirao. I have become mad of Jansi Rani serial.
We never feel Gangador and Rani are acting as couple. They are very real. The director should have taken more scenes to show their intimacy.(they are like Dev and Radhika in chinna marumagal). We cannot forget Samar Sing, Khoskan and Karma. samar has a very powerful face. during the last battle we feel Karma is in the real battle field. Dhamodar is sooooo cute. Where they find this pretty boy? The short appearance of Mote Prince is very powerful. Ladai Sarkar is very much real. I am very eager to see the making of Jansi Rani. (how long they shoot the serial, where and the artist in the sets, like that.)

The stupid part of the serial is Gangadar order to arrest Samar without any clarification and Rani dragging the bullock cart with Karma and Samar to the village from the fort( where Rani was there for few years and nobody from the fort able to find her). The director should have think of any other believable idea. We must congratulate Nelson (seems to be a foreigner). Without knowing the language he acted superbly. At the sight of him we hate him. When one eye closed he showed super expression. Special mention should be made to Rose Nelson. Her acting and character is excellent. The director has carved each and every character. Special mention should be made to the selection of dubbing artist. I have never seen in any other dubbing serial tthe voices suits the artist. Here the voices suits all the characters especially for 14 year old Rani and then matured Rani. The Britisher who respect Rani is also wonderful.
Where they find the cruel face marshal? The dubbing voice for him is very much suitable. Will you please telecast the makings of Jahnsi Rani.

Bravery, honesty, kind-heartedness, patriotism, cleverness of Jhansi Rani is well shown in the serial. This the the life time roll for all the artists. They dragged the serial to some extent in the latter stage but ended it all of a sudden without any explanation. I can watch this serial any no of times. Rani was really a very brave soul... the very 1st warrior princess of our country.we are really fortunate to have such a great warrior...highly trained in all the war tactics with guerrilla war of maratha's..Her fight with British force was really a heart-throbbing history..if we actually imagine that times spirit during her fight..how a 22 yr young girl's hands were able to handle that 1-2.5 kg steel sword..n how she was able to pierce a unit of more that 20-30 soldiers in just a flash..how she survived by fighting hundreds of soldiers in wars of kalpi and Gwalior and zhansi.. it was really fascinating..to hear..the war histories of Raniji...it has proved that she was not just an ordinary women..she was nothing bt a form of our Goddesess Durga...cz No women of that era or this running era couldn't even think off what rani has done...Though she had played short part of our freedom struggle but she showed the world the ultimate courage and bravery of women power..She left her glory and inspiration of our next generations..of her freedom fight...when i use to read the book of 1857 freedom struggle many times.. i always stopped at Rani's era..had read it twice,thrice...n many more times ..at that time i use to imagine that war scene of Kalpi where Our great maratha warrior Shri Tatya Tope ji and Rani ji fought very bravely with british single handedly....i was really fascinated that how they both able to fight such huge opponent...only due to the bravery,warriorism they had in their blood..i had also seen the zhansi palace and Gwalior fort and remains of Wars in Zhansi and Gwalior fort..when i was observing the huge damage of zhansi fort belongings of rani at that time..i imagined..the ultimate resistant stand of 2 weeks of Rani of zhansi v/s british forces with heavy shelling,the fearless fighting spirit of rani and she just pierced everything which came into her way....it was really a heart-throbbing experince of mine during my visit to zhansi fort......I am so much greatly impressed by the bravery and patriotic feelings of Maharani Jhansi.....and i salute to that ultimate bravery,courage,sacrifice for her people shown by the goddesses woman....we Indians feel very proud and lucky to have such a great legendary warrior as a part of our history....Hats off to Maharani Lakshmibai...We will never forget the glories of your bravery and courage...you will always remain in our hearts till the end of earth...Jab tak suraj,chand Rahenga Rani lakshmibai tera naam rahega......Jai Hind jay Maharashtra...
